Santo Kyoden, one of the most noted colleagues of the main character of Tsutaya Juzaburo in this year’s NHK Historical Drama, Unbound, was a man of many talents: a fiction author and artist under the penname Kitao Masanobu, a kyoka writer, a seller of bags and medicine, a philologist, and more. Here, visitors can learn about the details in Komongawa, one of Santo’s most noted works of fiction, which combines humorous prose with designs he came up with. The images in this work allow us to see how commoners accepted the alphabet, which was introduced to Japan during the Edo period. Here, too, you can see the impressive work of Santo Kyoden.
