A variety of specialties and famous sights that are unique to each post-town appears within Utagawa Hiroshige’s “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road” that depicts scenery from the Nihonbashi of Edo to the Great Bridge at Sanjo of Kyoto. This exhibition will feature Hiroshige’s Tokaido series in separate sessions including Part 1 with “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” (Tsutaya Edition), Part 2 with “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road” (Hoeido Edition), and Part 3 with “Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations” (The Vertical Tokaido). Each “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road” will be introduced along with the specialties and famous sights that appear within the series.

Comic Tokaido!

The second exhibition held in the exhibition room will feature “Comic Tokaido” that focuses on “Comic Scroll Paintings of The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” created by comic artists of the Taisho era, as well as Ukiyo-e and other artwork by Hiroshige that used concepts from the Kokkeibon (humorous book), “Shank’s Mare”.
