Utagawa Hiroshige is well known for the “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido”; however, other than the widely known “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido” (Hoeido Edition), Hiroshige has created approximately 20 varieties of the Tokaido series during his lifetime. This exhibition will introduce the 2 series: Vertical Ōban, “Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations” (The Vertical Tokaido), and the Horizontal Chuban, “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” (Tsutaya Edition) published by Hanmoto (publisher), Tsutaya Kichizo. Both vertical and horizontal structured pieces will be displayed together so they can be compared.
Do you prefer vertical? Or horizontal?
The exhibition room will compare Hiroshige’s representative piece “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” that was depicted in his later years with other horizontal pieces that depict the same locations within Edo.
